Are Dollar Coins Worth Anything? Ike, Susan B. Anthony, and Sacagawea Dollars
Most Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, and Sacagawea dollars are worth face value, but a few silver versions and varieties are worth more. Here's what to check.
Modern dollar coins never really caught on with the public, so a lot of them ended up saved in drawers and piggy banks. People often ask me whether their Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, or golden dollars are worth anything. Most are worth face value, but there are a few to watch for.

Eisenhower Dollars (1971 to 1978)
The big “Ike” dollar shows President Dwight Eisenhower on the front and, on most dates, an eagle landing on the moon on the back, based on the Apollo 11 mission patch.
- Coins made for circulation are copper-nickel clad and contain no silver.
- 40% silver versions were made at San Francisco (with an S mint mark) and sold to collectors from 1971 to 1976. They came in proof packaging or in uncirculated sets, often in a blue or brown package.
- Bicentennial Ikes (dated 1776-1976) have a Liberty Bell and the moon on the back. Most are clad and worth face value. The silver ones have an S mint mark and were sold in collector sets.
Circulated clad Ikes are worth face value. The 40% silver ones are worth more because of their silver, and uncirculated coins in top condition can bring a collector premium.
Susan B. Anthony Dollars (1979 to 1981, and 1999)
These small dollars are about the size of a quarter, which is part of why the public didn’t like them.
- They contain no silver.
- The 1979-P “Wide Rim” (also called “Near Date”) variety has the date closer to the rim and is worth a premium.
- 1981 dollars were only sold in Mint sets, so they’re scarcer than earlier dates.

Sacagawea and Native American Dollars (2000 to Today)
The gold-colored dollars show Sacagawea carrying her infant son. Since 2009, the back has a new Native American-themed design each year.
- They contain no gold (they’re made of copper with a manganese brass coating).
- The 2000-P “Cheerios” dollar was included in some boxes of Cheerios cereal in 2000 and has a slightly different, more detailed eagle tail. It’s rare and valuable.
- The 2000 “mule” is a famous error that paired a state quarter front with a Sacagawea dollar back. Very rare.
Presidential Dollars (2007 to 2016, and 2020)
These gold-colored dollars honored U.S. presidents, with lettering on the edge. Some were struck without the edge lettering, which is a collectible error. Most others are worth face value.

The Bottom Line
Most modern dollar coins are worth one dollar. The ones worth a closer look are 40% silver Ikes with an S mint mark, the 1979-P Wide Rim Susan B. Anthony, 1981 SBA dollars, and rare varieties like the Cheerios dollar and missing-edge-lettering Presidential dollars.
